How are Capital and Endowment Campaigns different from an Annual Major Donor Campaign?

Capital and Endowment Campaigns involve much more money and may be conducted only a few times in an organization's entire life. The goal of Major Gifts is to have money for annual operating expenses. The goal of Capital Campaigns is to be able to build or buy or renovate a building or take on some other major expenditure. The goal of an Endowment is to insure financial stability forever.

What will your Grassroots Organization get out of this workshop?

Your organization will learn that you are capable of conducting Capital and Endowment Campaigns if you want. You will learn what is involved and what effect these campaigns have on annual income. Many of you will learn that your organization is not ready to take on such a large campaign.

You will also learn:

  • How to plan a capital campaign
  • When to think about an endowment
  • How to get the board and staff ready
  • How to identify and approach prospects
  • How to ask for more money than you can imagine

And much more...

Who should attend this workshop?

This is a follow-up to Kim's previous workshop (Major Gift Fundraising for nonprofit Organizations). Attendees should have participated in that workshop or other training provided by the Center for Responsible Funding, or have a solid understanding of the basics of grassroots fundraising.

This workshop is geared to groups with budgets of $50,000 to $750,000.

What staffing/organizational resources does a grassroots nonprofit need to begin and/or to institutionalize this work?

A group needs a development director or someone who can devote full time to development work as well as an established and functioning individual donor campaign. They need to be familiar with the principles of fundraising and have a good board in place.

The Center for Responsible Funding

CRF expands the funding base of organizations working for social and economic justice in a number of ways. CRF trains grassroots organizations to increase their fundraising capacity, promotes worksite combined charity campaigns which allow umbrella organizations to solicit in the workplace on an equal basis, networks on common problems, and manages the City of Philadelphia Employees' Combined Campaign, one of the most successful municipal campaigns in the country.

The Philadelphia Foundation

TPF is a $220 million public charity that has served as the community foundation for Southeastern Pennsylvania since 1918. The Foundation manages charitable funds that have been established by caring individuals, and awards distributions from these funds to support humanitarian, educational and cultural programs, just as the donors intended.
