The Center for Responsible Funding (CRF) is a nonprofit organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with federal 501(c)(3) tax status. Founded in 1980, CRF has serviced the fundraising needs of various nonprofit organizations in the Delaware Valley. It advocates for the reform of philanthropy to equalize the distribution of resources received by organizations working for social and economic justice. It plays a leadership role nationally in workplace fundraising issues.

Our mission is to expand the funding base of organizations working for social and economic justice through a variety of means including:

    • Expanding the opportunities of these organizations to raise money in workplace campaigns including solicitations, matching funds and volunteer programs

    • Expanding the capacity of constituent organizations by means of collaborations and skill building

    • Promoting public awareness of activities, needs and contributions of the nonprofit sector

    • Research and education of funders on the needs of constituent organizations

Since 1980, CRF has helped charitable organizations and social/economic justice nonprofits raise $42 million. This money has been raised by organizations through combined campaigns made possible through the efforts of CRF; through the United Way's Donor Option (now Specific Care) program which CRF worked to make accessible; and through using skills taught to area nonprofits by CRF.

DEFINITION OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

There is much debate around the concept of social justice. Our approach is a broad definition. Social justice fundraising, to us, revolves around four major dimensions:

  1. Addressing root causes of social problems;
  2. Communicating and disseminating information about root causes to the public, with a particular emphasis on reaching those who are directly disadvantaged by social problems;
  3. Strengthening existing or new social movements that work for social, political, and economic equity; and
  4. Promoting inclusion of constituents in grantmaking decision-making processes and governance of powers.
